Then, when you’re shooting the right side of the clip, you can be looking at the monitor (stage right) which will make it look like you’re looking at your first self, and you can interact in “real time” with yourself from the first clip.

The main trick will be to get the timing down during the first clip.

Timing's really important when you do effects like this. I tend to memorize what my dialogue is and mentally time it out, but your idea's much more likely to yield exactly the results you want. This one's pretty basic. Any program that allows you to split the screen or even do a wipe transition should be able to handle this effect.
